Migrate from gemini to chatgpt.

13 hands-on-verified translation patterns — what carries over and what to watch for. Cited to the Feature Parity Map; the audit tells you whether the move is worth it.

Both products offer a side-by-side editing surface for documents, code, and (Gemini only) slides + small apps. Open Canvas from the composer toolbar on either side. ChatGPT Canvas exports as PDF, Word (.docx), Markdown, or code files (.py, .js, .sql); Gemini Canvas exports directly to Google Docs or Google Slides via 'Share & export'. Both support iterative edits via prompts and direct manipulation. For slide generation specifically, Gemini Canvas is the parity gap — ChatGPT has no native slide builder (until you connect Canva or similar via Apps).

  • Warning: ChatGPT Canvas is web/desktop-only as of May 2026 — no mobile Canvas. Gemini Canvas is available on mobile.
  • Warning: Gemini Canvas can build runnable small apps (HTML/JS); ChatGPT Canvas does code but does not host a runnable preview surface directly (use the new Apps SDK or Canva integration).
  • Warning: Slide generation in Gemini Canvas is capped at 20/day on Free, unlimited on AI Pro/Ultra. ChatGPT has no equivalent native primitive.
  • Warning: Both Canvas surfaces can drift out of sync with the underlying chat — re-open the Canvas via the chat's preview card to be sure you're editing the live version.

Both products let the assistant read from and write to user-owned cloud data, but the connector graphs are tilted to each vendor's ecosystem. ChatGPT supports Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook (mail + calendar), SharePoint, Teams, GitHub, Dropbox, Box, Linear, HubSpot — both for chat actions and Deep Research. Gemini's Connected Apps cover Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, Keep, Tasks (GA May 2025), plus Maps, YouTube, Flights, Hotels. Manage in Settings > Apps (Gemini) or Settings > Connectors (ChatGPT). Invocation: '@AppName' on Gemini; ChatGPT auto-routes or lets you pin apps in the composer.

  • Warning: Gemini has no first-party connector for Microsoft 365 (Outlook, OneDrive, Teams) — a hard gap for users moving from Microsoft-heavy workflows. ChatGPT does.
  • Warning: ChatGPT has no native Google Maps / YouTube / Flights / Hotels integration; those are Gemini-only.
  • Warning: Gemini's Workspace apps may be admin-gated on work/school accounts. ChatGPT connectors default off for Enterprise & Edu and require admin enablement.
  • Warning: Write actions exist in both (draft Gmail/Outlook, create Docs/Sheets) but require the relevant account to be connected and may need re-auth.
  • Warning: ChatGPT Synced Connectors pre-index org Drive content for faster semantic search; Gemini does not advertise an equivalent indexing primitive for consumer accounts.

ChatGPT Projects (GA since late 2024) is a flat workspace: a folder of chats with project-scoped files and project-scoped custom instructions. On Gemini, an analogous Projects feature is reported to be in limited rollout in early 2026 but is not documented on support.google.com, so treat as not generally available. The closest GA equivalent is a custom Gem with a Knowledge file set and instructions, which approximates 'Project files + project instructions' but does not group chats. Heavy Gemini users often install third-party Chrome extensions (Toolbox for Gemini, Gemini Chat Folders) for folder-style chat organization.

  • Warning: Gems do not group chats; each conversation with a Gem is still a standalone chat. There is no 'all chats inside Project X' view in Gemini.
  • Warning: ChatGPT Projects has no nested folders either, so neither product offers a true folder tree natively.
  • Warning: Migrating from a ChatGPT Project means recreating its custom instructions as a Gem and re-uploading the project files as the Gem's Knowledge. Chat history within the ChatGPT project will not transfer.
  • Warning: If/when Gemini Projects becomes GA, expect feature parity to shift; verify support.google.com before assuming rollout.

ChatGPT keeps full chat history in the sidebar plus a separate 'Memory' store for facts. Gemini keeps history under Gemini Apps Activity (myactivity.google.com/product/gemini) plus a separate 'Saved info' store. To migrate, export ChatGPT data (Settings > Data Controls > Export data) — you'll get a ZIP of all chats; manually re-seed important threads in Gemini if needed. Both products support temporary/incognito chats not saved to history.

  • Warning: Gemini's auto-delete granularity is 3 / 18 / 36 months or never. ChatGPT's chat history retention is account-lifetime unless you delete; there is no built-in auto-delete schedule on the consumer side.
  • Warning: If Gemini Apps Activity is turned off, chats are retained only 72 hours for abuse review. ChatGPT history retention with 'Improve the model for everyone' off is 30 days for abuse review.
  • Warning: Past-chat personalization in Gemini is an opt-in separate from Saved Info; ChatGPT's 'reference chat history' is also a distinct toggle from Memory.
  • Warning: Deleting a Gemini chat also deletes its Canvas docs/apps; deleting a ChatGPT chat does not delete its Canvas artifacts immediately if exported.
  • Warning: No automated chat-by-chat import path exists in either direction; expect to copy/paste prompts manually.

Both products offer custom assistants with a name, persistent instructions, knowledge files, and a public gallery. Create a Gem at gemini.google.com > Explore Gems > New Gem (or Gem Manager > Create new Gem) and paste the GPT's system prompt into Instructions, upload the same Knowledge files, and pick an icon. Gemini's public Gem gallery is the analogue of the GPT Store (10,000+ public Gems). Going the other direction: a Gem becomes a Custom GPT via the GPT Builder at chatgpt.com/gpts/editor; reupload knowledge and paste instructions.

  • Warning: GPT Builder also supports Actions (API calls to external services); Gems do not have a direct equivalent in the consumer product. Workspace integrations are app-wide, not Gem-scoped.
  • Warning: Creating GPTs requires a paid ChatGPT plan (Plus/Pro/Business/Enterprise). Creating Gems is free in 2026 (previously required Gemini Advanced).
  • Warning: Capability toggles differ: GPTs let you enable/disable Web Browsing, DALL-E/GPT Image, Code Interpreter, Canvas per GPT; Gems inherit the user's plan capabilities.
  • Warning: Shared Gemini chats originating from a Gem cannot be continued by recipients; shared GPT chats in ChatGPT have similar continuation restrictions for GPT-scoped state.
  • Warning: GPT Store has monetization/revenue-share for builders; Gem gallery does not (as of 2026).

Both products ship a multi-step agentic research mode that browses the web, iterates over plans, and produces a long-form sourced report. Trigger from the composer menu: 'Deep Research' on ChatGPT, 'Deep Research' on Gemini. Both let you connect personal data sources (ChatGPT: Drive, SharePoint, Dropbox, Box, Outlook, Gmail, Calendar, Linear, GitHub, HubSpot, Teams; Gemini: Gmail, Drive, Chat via Workspace apps). Output is a structured report with citations; ChatGPT exports as PDF, Gemini exports to Google Docs or copies as text. Gemini's Deep Research Max (Apr 2026, Gemini 3.1 Pro, MCP support) is the higher-tier variant.

  • Warning: Quotas differ sharply. Gemini: 5/month (Free), 12/day (AI Plus), 20/day (AI Pro), 120/day (AI Ultra). ChatGPT: ~10/month (Free Plus 10 lightweight), 25/month (Plus), 250/month (Pro) — verify current numbers as these change frequently.
  • Warning: ChatGPT Deep Research can pause mid-run for user refinement; Gemini's report is more 'fire and forget' in the consumer UI.
  • Warning: Gemini outputs charts/infographics directly in the report (2026 update); ChatGPT relies on inline tables and text by default.
  • Warning: Deep Research Max (Gemini Pro/Ultra) supports MCP and richer visualizations; ChatGPT does not yet expose MCP to consumer Deep Research as of May 2026.
  • Warning: Run times: both take 5-30 minutes typically; expect longer for complex queries.

Both products accept PDFs, DOCX, TXT, PPTX, XLSX, CSV, and common image formats. ChatGPT's hard per-file limit is 512 MB (with text/document files capped at ~2M tokens), images 20 MB, spreadsheets effectively ~50 MB. Gemini caps non-video files at 100 MB each, up to 10 files per prompt, with video up to 2 GB. For multi-file uploads, Gemini's 10-file ceiling is a hard cap; ChatGPT Plus allows up to 80 file uploads per 3 hours but typically one prompt's worth at a time. Use Gemini for native video/audio (5 min video / 10 min audio on free; 1 hour video / 3 hours audio on Pro/Ultra); ChatGPT cannot natively ingest long video.

  • Warning: Gemini natively ingests video and long audio; ChatGPT consumer cannot — you must transcribe first.
  • Warning: Gemini supports a whole code folder or GitHub repo per chat (up to 5,000 files / 100 MB total); ChatGPT requires either GitHub connector (Plus+) or manual file uploads.
  • Warning: ChatGPT spreadsheets above ~50 MB frequently fail despite the 512 MB headline limit; keep CSVs small in practice.
  • Warning: Gemini Drive uploads require Workspace connection and Keep Activity enabled; ChatGPT Google Drive connector is opt-in per session.
  • Warning: Context windows differ: Gemini Pro/Ultra is 1M tokens, AI Plus 128K, Basic 32K; ChatGPT consumer is effectively 256K (Pro) / 128K (Plus) / 32K (Free).

Both products generate and edit images conversationally. ChatGPT uses GPT Image 1.5 (the successor to gpt-image-1, top of LM Arena image leaderboard for text rendering and prompt adherence in 2026); generate by asking 'create an image of...' or attaching an image and asking for edits. Gemini uses Nano Banana for fast conversational edits and Imagen for higher-fidelity generations. Both support multi-turn iterative editing and reference-image conditioning. For high-fidelity photoreal or stylized images, both are competitive; for in-image text rendering, ChatGPT (GPT Image 1.5) currently leads.

  • Warning: ChatGPT Plus quota is ~50 images per 3-hour window (GPT Image 1.5). Gemini Free is 20 images/day, AI Plus 50/day, Pro 100/day, Ultra 1000/day — different cadence (per day vs per 3h window).
  • Warning: Sora is discontinued (image gen removed from Sora March 2026; web app closed April 26 2026; API shutdown September 24 2026). Migrate all Sora image workflows into the main ChatGPT image surface.
  • Warning: Gemini's Imagen has historically been more conservative on faces/likenesses than ChatGPT; expect more refusals on real-person prompts.
  • Warning: Watermarking: Imagen-generated images carry SynthID. GPT Image 1.5 outputs carry C2PA metadata. Neither watermark is visible by default but both can be detected by their respective tools.

Both products separate two personalization primitives: a deliberate set of rules ('Custom Instructions' on both sides) and an automatically-managed facts store ('Memory' / 'Saved Memories' in ChatGPT, 'Saved info' in Gemini). Migrate by copying the two ChatGPT Custom Instructions text boxes ('What ChatGPT should know about you' + 'How ChatGPT should respond') into Gemini's Settings > Personalization > Custom instructions. For memory, paste each ChatGPT 'Manage memory' entry into Gemini by prompting 'Remember: <fact>' or by adding entries under Saved Info. Both can be reviewed/edited/deleted any time.

  • Warning: ChatGPT Custom Instructions are capped at ~1,500 characters per field; if your instruction set is shorter you may be tempted to over-stuff in Gemini, but keep it terse for best results.
  • Warning: ChatGPT's Memory is fully passive (the model decides what to save). Gemini's Saved Info accepts passive saves too but is more conservative; users often have to explicitly say 'remember...' to persist a fact.
  • Warning: Google explicitly warns against storing sensitive data (passwords, full addresses, financial info) in Saved Info; OpenAI's Memory has similar guidance but is less prominently surfaced.
  • Warning: Custom Instructions on ChatGPT are available on Free; in Gemini, Custom Instructions and Saved Info are also on Free as of 2026 (previously Advanced-only).

ChatGPT (May 2026): Free $0, Go $8/mo, Plus $20/mo, Pro tiered at $100/mo or $200/mo, Business $20/user/mo annual or $25/user/mo monthly (min 2 seats, April 2026 price drop), Enterprise custom. Gemini (May 2026): Free, Google AI Plus $9.99/mo, Google AI Pro $19.99/mo, Google AI Ultra $249.99/mo (with reported reduction to $200/mo post I/O 2026). Closest mappings: ChatGPT Free <-> Gemini Free; ChatGPT Go <-> Gemini AI Plus (light paid tier); ChatGPT Plus <-> Gemini AI Pro (~$20 sweet spot); ChatGPT Pro $200 <-> Gemini AI Ultra (top consumer tier).

  • Warning: Annual billing: ChatGPT Plus has no annual discount (monthly only). Gemini paid plans have annual options with discounts. ChatGPT Business has annual ($20/seat) vs monthly ($25/seat).
  • Warning: Ultra/Pro tier flux: Gemini AI Ultra publicly listed at $249.99 but multiple sources report reduction to $200/mo to match ChatGPT Pro; verify before quoting to a customer.
  • Warning: Google AI Pro bundles 2 TB Google One storage and family sharing up to 5; ChatGPT plans bundle nothing comparable outside the chat surface itself.
  • Warning: Free-tier ads: ChatGPT Free shows contextual ads in US (since Feb 9 2026). Gemini Free does not display ads as of May 2026.
  • Warning: Both products gate Deep Research quotas, image quotas, and model access by tier — see capability-specific patterns for the exact numbers.

Both products offer a real-time, low-latency voice mode that processes audio natively (audio-in, audio-out) without intermediate text transcription. ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode is reachable from the waveform icon in the composer (web + mobile). Gemini Live is reachable from the Live icon in the Gemini app (mobile-first, web rollout in 2026). Both support natural interruptions, multilingual conversation, real-time translation, and emotional inflection. Free tier on both has time limits; paid tiers extend usage substantially.

  • Warning: Gemini Live supports screen sharing and camera input as a real-time multimodal stream; ChatGPT Advanced Voice has video input via the mobile app but less polished screen-share on web.
  • Warning: Voice mode availability by region differs; both have EU/UK delays for new voice features at various points.
  • Warning: ChatGPT Advanced Voice on Free has a daily time cap (a few minutes); Plus extends to ~1 hour/day; Pro is effectively unlimited. Gemini Live time caps vary by tier and are not always documented.
  • Warning: Custom voices (clone your own / pick a non-default voice) require paid tier on both.
  • Warning: Voice mode cannot natively call connectors / write to Workspace apps in either product — it's a conversation primitive, not an agent surface.
medium confidence · 0.70docsverified 4 days agosource ↗source ↗

Both products produce snapshot share links for individual chats. ChatGPT: click Share at top right > Create link; URL is chatgpt.com/share/<id>. Gemini: Share > Create public link; URL is g.co/gemini/share/<id>. Recipients don't need an account. In both, the share is a point-in-time snapshot — later edits or new turns don't propagate. Recipients can continue the chat in their own product (Gemini: except Gem chats / minors; ChatGPT: any signed-in user can continue from the shared point).

  • Warning: Gemini Gem-based chats cannot be continued by recipients; the analogous ChatGPT GPT-based shared chats have similar restrictions on GPT-private state.
  • Warning: Work/school accounts can have public sharing disabled by admin in both products. On Gemini, the admin control rolled out in March 2026 (Workspace Updates). On ChatGPT Enterprise/Business, admins can disable sharing organization-wide.
  • Warning: If sharing is disabled, fall back to Export (Canvas to Docs / PDF) or copy-paste.
  • Warning: Shared Canvas content propagates with the chat link on both products, but media (images/videos) may be re-hosted on the vendor's CDN — broken-link risk if you depend on long-lived URLs.
medium confidence · 0.70docsverified 4 days agosource ↗source ↗

Both products ground responses against live web search and cite sources inline. ChatGPT uses its in-house browse tool (Bing-backed historically, with OpenAI's own search index in 2026); Gemini grounds against Google Search. Behavior is automatic in both — the model decides when to ground, though you can force it ('search the web for...'). Citations appear as inline numbered links (ChatGPT) or chip-style source pills (Gemini). For source-quality-sensitive workflows, prefer Gemini when the user's mental model is 'what's the top Google result' and ChatGPT when broader sourcing across long-tail sites matters.

  • Warning: Gemini grounding sometimes silently no-ops if the model has confident parametric knowledge; click the source chips to confirm grounding happened.
  • Warning: ChatGPT browse can be rate-limited on Free; Gemini grounding is included on all tiers.
  • Warning: Neither product reliably surfaces paywalled-source content; both fall back to summaries / snippets.
  • Warning: Source freshness depends on each vendor's index — Google Search beats OpenAI's index on hyperlocal and breaking-news queries in many cases.
