ChatGPT Projects (GA since late 2024) is a flat workspace: a folder of chats with project-scoped files and project-scoped custom instructions. On Gemini, an analogous Projects feature is reported to be in limited rollout in early 2026 but is not documented on support.google.com, so treat as not generally available. The closest GA equivalent is a custom Gem with a Knowledge file set and instructions, which approximates 'Project files + project instructions' but does not group chats. Heavy Gemini users often install third-party Chrome extensions (Toolbox for Gemini, Gemini Chat Folders) for folder-style chat organization.
- Warning: Gems do not group chats; each conversation with a Gem is still a standalone chat. There is no 'all chats inside Project X' view in Gemini.
- Warning: ChatGPT Projects has no nested folders either, so neither product offers a true folder tree natively.
- Warning: Migrating from a ChatGPT Project means recreating its custom instructions as a Gem and re-uploading the project files as the Gem's Knowledge. Chat history within the ChatGPT project will not transfer.

ChatGPT keeps full chat history in the sidebar plus a separate 'Memory' store for facts. Gemini keeps history under Gemini Apps Activity (myactivity.google.com/product/gemini) plus a separate 'Saved info' store. To migrate, export ChatGPT data (Settings > Data Controls > Export data) — you'll get a ZIP of all chats; manually re-seed important threads in Gemini if needed. Both products support temporary/incognito chats not saved to history.
- Warning: Gemini's auto-delete granularity is 3 / 18 / 36 months or never. ChatGPT's chat history retention is account-lifetime unless you delete; there is no built-in auto-delete schedule on the consumer side.
- Warning: If Gemini Apps Activity is turned off, chats are retained only 72 hours for abuse review. ChatGPT history retention with 'Improve the model for everyone' off is 30 days for abuse review.

Gemini's public Gem gallery is the analogue of the GPT Store (10,000+ public Gems). Going the other direction: a Gem becomes a Custom GPT via the GPT Builder at chatgpt.com/gpts/editor; reupload knowledge and paste instructions.
- Warning: GPT Builder also supports Actions (API calls to external services); Gems do not have a direct equivalent in the consumer product. Workspace integrations are app-wide, not Gem-scoped.
