Setup steps
Work through these in order. Check each off as you go; your progress is saved on this device.
Pick the Claude plan that matches your current Perplexity tier. For individuals the price points line up cleanly: Perplexity Free → Claude Free; Perplexity Pro ($20/mo) → Claude Pro ($20/mo); Perplexity Max ($200/mo) → Claude Max 20x ($200/mo). Note that web search and Research mode are gated behind paid tiers, so if cited research is your daily driver, choose at least Claude Pro. Sign up or upgrade at claude.ai before configuring anything else.
Plans and pricingThis is the biggest behavioral difference. In Perplexity every query is a grounded web search by default; in Claude web search is an opt-in tool. Go to Claude Settings > Capabilities > Web search and enable it. Then, in each chat where you want current cited answers, click the "+" button in the prompt bar and toggle on Web search. Expect to lose Perplexity's source-type focus filters (web/academic/social/finance/video) — there is no equivalent filter, so specify source type in your prompt instead (see translated prompts below).

[Perplexity default: type a question, get a grounded answer with inline sources]
Search the web and answer the question below. Requirements: - Use Web search (I have it enabled) and ground every claim in current sources. - Add inline citations after each claim and list the source URLs at the end. - Be concise and analytical: lead with the bottom-line conclusion, then the supporting evidence in 3–5 bullets. - If you cannot verify a claim from a source, say so explicitly rather than guessing. - Prefer [specify source type here: e.g. peer-reviewed/academic, primary/official, reputable news]. Note: Claude has no source-type filter, so I am specifying it in-prompt. Question: <your question here>
